Research Process

SHOOK Research identifies and evaluates advisors across the financial services industry, including banks, broker-dealers, custodians, insurance companies, and other financial institutions. Advisors are considered based on nominations and must meet minimum experience, production, and compliance thresholds.

The evaluation process includes a combination of:

Online surveys
Telephone interviews
Virtual interviews
In-person due diligence meetings at advisors’ offices

In-person interviews are a central component of SHOOK’s process and are used to evaluate advisors beyond self-reported data.

Evaluation Period

For the 2026 Forbes | SHOOK Next-Gen rankings, quantitative financial data (including assets under management and revenue) is evaluated and captured as of March 31, 2026.

Basic Requirements

Advisors considered for the ranking generally must:

Have at least 4 years of experience as an advisor
Have at least 1 year at their current firm (with exceptions for acquisitions and similar circumstances)

Complete an online survey
Maintain an acceptable compliance record
Primarily serve individual clients rather than institutions

Quantitative & Qualitative Factors

The ranking incorporates both quantitative and qualitative factors, including:

Quantitative factors may include:

Assets under management (including both custodied and held-away assets)
Revenue generated
Client retention and other client-related metrics

Qualitative factors may include:

Client service model and experience
Investment philosophy and business practices
Compliance history and regulatory disclosures
Professional credentials and experience
Community involvement
Interviews with advisors, management, and industry peers

Portfolio performance is not a factor in the ranking due to varying client objectives and the lack of standardized audited performance data.

Ranking Methodology

The ranking is produced using a proprietary algorithm that compares advisors across multiple weighted criteria, including business practices, client service models, and professional conduct. Each factor is scored and aggregated to produce a comparative ranking.
